The Newton
YMCA Competitive Men’s Basketball League has been in existence since 1896.
While the location was moved to the space it currently occupies on Church St.
in 1911, the league remained the same. Games of 4 v. 4 were played on a high
school regulation sized court. It was in this setting that the Newton YMCA
hosted basketball tournaments, which attracted elite players from Newton and
surrounding areas. The legendary Boston Celtics even made appearances at youth
clinics and other special events.
In the fall of 2003, updates were made to both the league regulations and the
facility. The West Suburban Basketball League (WSBL) held its first game in
January 2004 in a newly renovated, 10,000 sq/ft. facility.
Today the WSBL is one of Boston's premier basketball leagues, featuring 5 v. 5
play on a regulation court with certified officials and player statistics.
Leagues are offered year round for all levels of competition.
