WSBL League History

The Newton YMCA started Competitive Men's Basketball around 1896 at the original Newton Corner location.  The current Church street location opened a few years after that in 1911.  The gym featured a full high school regulation sized court with suspended indoor running track above and around it.  Youth and spectators would often watch league games from the track above.  Over the years the Newton Y would host basketball tournaments and would have some of the elite players from Newton and the surrounding areas participating.  Even players from the legendary Boston Celtics made appearances at youth clinics and other special events.

Until the Spring of 2003, Men's Basketball games were 4 on 4 and played on the old high school regulation sized floor.  The WSBL was created by Paul Lockwood in the Fall of 2003.  League play was suspended until January of 2004 due to the renovations of the old gymnasium and opening of the 10,000 sq/ft. facility where games are played today.

Today the WSBL is one of Boston's premier basketball leagues, featuring 5 on 5 play on regulation NCAA size court, with 2 certified officials, player statistics, and playoffs. Leagues are offered in the Fall, Winter and Summer on three levels of competition.
